The EXPLORER has been designed as an offshore cruiser. It is relatively shoal draught at 5'5" (1.651 m) so that it can take advantage of sheltered anchorages which are sometimes prohibitive to deep draught craft. The Explorer is skinned in 4mm plate while the decks and cabin are of 3mm. The frames are 3" x ¹/₄" (75 x 6) and are reinforced internally with 1¹/₄ x ¹/₄" bar. The bottoms of the frames are solid floors cut from 4mm plate. The craft has a crash bulkhead at No. 1 station and has two further steel bulkheads both fore and aft of the cockpit and all bulkheads are 3mm plate with 25 x 5 stiffening bars. The engine is mounted below the saloon floor and is direct drive to the propeller shaft. Details of stern tube etc. are shown on the plan. The craft will handle motors such as the 4 or 6 cylinder Ford and there is 38" vertical height under the floor to accommodate the engine.

The interior layout consists of vee bunks in the forard cabin for 2 people. Immediately after this two large sail lockers port and starboard. In the saloon there is a large galley and dinette which would sleep two adults. Under the cockpit there are two large berths as well as folding pipe berths port and starboard. In the after cabin there is a large double berth 5 x 6' with two large wardrobes and plenty of storage.

The craft is cutter rigged with a jib boom on the staysail for ease of handling and the mainsail has three deep slab reefs to enable the craft to handle strong conditions. The large freeboard coupled with the generous beam ensures that the Explorer is an extremely dry and stable craft. The rig has been purposely kept compact to enhance the stability and the Explorer has been designed to sail at the minimum angle of heel for a keel yacht. The craft has been designed to withstand the rigours of ocean cruising and is an extremely strong hull specifically designed for ease of construction by the amateur builder.

The plan includes FULLSIZE PATTERNS of the frames, stem, transom and keel plus detailed drawings on setting up, hull construction, mast, spars, fuel and water tanks, stern tube, rudder etc. as well as steering and general layout plus written instructions.
