We have based the SANDBAGGER on our extremely popular Tamaki design, adding a little more beam aft and adding another chine in the topsides. The Sandbagger has 3 chines per side and the 9mm ply is applied in strips on the multi-chine system. The bottom of the craft is constructed from 3 laminations of 9mm ply and the stem is 2 laminations of 22m solid timber. The Sandbagger can be powered with small outboard motors or up to 6 h.p. inboard petrol engines. A motor such as a 3 h.p. Honda stationary engine gives a speed of 51/2 knots in this vessel. The rig is comprised of a solid mast which is 3" or 76mm at the base tapering to 11/4" or 31mm at the top with a straight taper. The boom is 1 3/8" or 34mm tapered to 1 1/8" or 28mm on the outer end. The craft can be gaff rigged as an alternative. The mast would normally be made of light weight Oregon, Spruce or similar spar quality material. However, alloy tube could be used if desired.
We have found these dories to be easily handled on and off the trailer and although the length of 5.791 m seems long, with the fine ends the craft has an appearance of a smaller boat when it is in the water. The plan includes FULLSIZE PATTERNS of the frames, stem and transom and rudder plus detailed construction drawings and written instructions.
